Birmingham AP report on ongoing trial of Griswold charged with a shooting near a stone fire. Testimony includes Pelcemos Gulten denial of a 4 centaining device and Pau Meeks Jefferson County employee describing a man walking at 6:42 while a pistol was placed in a holster and the defendant observed distant activity.
AP reports Maj. Gen. James A. Van Fleet of Bartow Florida, commander of the 6th Division and former University of Florida football coach, narrowly escaped death or serious injury near the front. He had taken cover in a building when a shell hit, killing an artillery captain nearby and wounding a heavy weapons captain who landed in Van Fleet's lap. The 6th Division helped push Germans from a pocket southeast of Bastogne near the now eliminated Bastogne fight.
Lewis Henry Burell, 87, of Albertville, father of Mrs. V C Lokey, died recently. Funeral arrangements and will were to be announced, with notices indicating details to follow.
T D Samford of Opelka will speak at the Houston County Bar Association annual banquet Friday night at the Houston Hotel. New officers to be installed include McClintock as president, with Shealy vice president, Farmer secretary and Wilson treasurer. Past officers Lee Ramsey and Espy also noted. executive committee named McClintock Shealy Farmer Lee Merrill Pridgen Ramsey.

In military news two Dothan men James O Burns McClain and William Gray Espy received temporary promotions from second lieutenant to first lieutenant by the War Department.

A Dothan taxicab driver Albert Allums and his wife Mildred A. Tuma were arrested on a warrant for decoying or detaining a child. The warrant by James B. Powell names Sarzh Antonica Powell from Dalz Bell Powell. Each posted a $6,400 bond and was released.

In a sweeping Indo China operations series, Halsey’s Third Fleet disrupted Japan’s reserve of ships and oil capacity by attacking Cam Ranh Bay Hong Kong Swatow and Amoy. In two weeks American carrier planes sank 107 Japanese vessels and damaged 203 more while oil refineries and storage facilities suffered heavy losses.
Allied forces pressed into Sterignay and Bech as First Army captured seven positions including Samehateau Bech and a major road junction. Major General Harmon's Second Armored Division broke into Houffalize after heavy minefields, while Patton's Third Army moved five border towns along the Moselle valley threatening Trier. North of Strasbourg, Seventh Army crossed the Zorn River near Herrlisheim and Offendorf advancing under heavy fire.

In Homer Wisconsin a returning barber, Richard Duton, was greeted like a hero by a large welcome committee and townspeople. He then set up at Main Street Barber Shop, ready to trim about 2,000 shaggy heads in the area, including the surrounding rural community, after a three month layoff since the last barber left for the draft.
Reports say Soviet forces pierced the Polish defense line and captured Glogowiany, 28 miles north of Krakow, bringing them within 50 miles of the frontier. Berlin announced new offensives around Warsaw as Germans claimed deep penetrations near Warka and Pulawy.
Fire at a hotel caused multiple deaths with walls threatening to collapse. Victims were removed to Cook County Morgue as hotel staff aided in identification. Among the dead were two women. Servicemen aided evacuations by climbing to upper floors and lowering guests to safety. Coroner James Boudreaux, 27, of Mermentau Louisiana, and instructor Stephan Droter of Toledo helped seven people descend.

Tindell 20 son of Mr and Mrs A V Tin dell Cottonwood route two arrived at AAF Redistribution Station No 2 Miami Beach Florida for reassignment after a tour outside the continental United States He flew 87 missions as a B 24 gunner in 14 months in the Southwest Pacific and earned the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters He joined the AAF September 23 1942.
