Other highlights include Schmeling’s rise, Canzoneri’s title defense, Battling Battalino’s surprising reign, Vines’s tennis surge, Wills Moody reclaiming the national title, Helen Hicks’s golf triumph, Navy’s regatta win, Twenty Grand’s Derby record, and Pepper Martin’s famous A’s upset. The South Bend upset of Notre Dame by Southern California was the season’s most thrilling clash, edging out the Baseball World Series drama and Burke’s heroic open win.
