Wauthena Mullins Birthday Party Highlighted

Wauthena Mullins celebrated her first birthday with a party at the Mullins grandparents home on Cottonwood road. Guests enjoyed Christmas decorations, games, Eskimo pies, candy, and cake with souvenirs distributed. Attendees included Mary Anne Goodwin, Buddy Goodwin, Jack Mullins, Morris Tyce, Catherine Powell, Bille Ross Mullins, and several Mullins relatives.

Skating Party Hosts Joyful Night at Marion Home

Little Miss Francesa Mullen hosted a skating party at her East Newton street home with games and bonfire toast after skating. Guests included many local youths led by Frances Weatherly and Robin Dickins. In Marion Virginia, Sherwood Anderson’s son Robert L. Anderson bought control of the two Marion newspapers, while Anderson remains contributing editor and resident. Eighty BYP U members gathered for New Year’s breakfast at First Baptist Church with a green and white decor and multiple speakers and performances.

Fragmentary 1932 era notes recount a statewide bid for fame and record averages. It mentions a low average on record set when the bureau was established and cites temperatures reaching 109 degrees at Talladega and a cold 18 degrees at Riverton. A small tornado near Elba in Coffee county killed a child and injured others, with Elmore county suffering property damage. Smoke from a dry fall caused heavy hazard and visibilities dropped on November 11. A local forecaster, Mr Smyth, predicts only one more day of the year for Leap Year.

Alabama Weather Yields Favorable Crop Year Despite Tornado

The year saw extreme temperatures but no major natural disasters in Alabama. A small tornado was recorded and floods were absent. Despite over 14 inches of rainfall deficiency on December 1, government observer P. H. Smyth noted timely rains aided crops. Many records were set in November and December, including the highest average temperature for any November since 1872.
