Rev and Mrs Lamar Jones host a silver social at their North Poster Street home next Tuesday night. Attendees can enjoy a grab bag a beauty show and a variety of eats. Proceeds benefit Headland Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs Zeraffa Samuels aged 86 mother of Frank and Jesse James died after a collision involving the Rock Island and Frisco Railway near Oklahoma City. She was en route to Kansas City from the farm of her son Frank near Fletcher, Oklahoma.
Seattle officials moved to grant a permit for a forty story office skyscraper planned by the estate of L. C. Binith of Syracuse New York. Local agents for the Smith estate said construction will start within the next few weeks, making it the citys tallest office building outside New York.
Rodney of Ashford was in town today. John Moone returned to Malone this morning. A McDaniel of Abbeville was in the city Sunday. HV and Wickaona are mentioned with a brief in city context.
Yesterday Judge Crawford faced a busy day as a couple sought a ceremony. He improvised a service when the planned preacher was unavailable, succeeding after being pressed by the couple. In the past two days licenses were issued for Calvin Harrison and Mattie Haye. Bertha Buford and Christian Barefield wed in the probate office.
Mr. Simonsali and Miss Lillie Ethredge, a young couple from Ashford, were married here Saturday afternoon by Probate Judge A. C. Crawford in the probate office, in a quiet service attended by a few friends.
Mr. F. M. Pippinger and Miss Ethel Arnold of Midland City were married yesterday afternoon in the probate office by Judge A. C. Crawford. The ceremony was witnessed by a few friends and acquaintances. Edward A. Epler auditor for the Marletta Columbus and Cleveland Railroad, charged with embezzling 6000 dollars, escaped from the county jail today. George Bayless, held on burglary, also escaped with outside help. A duplicate cell-key aided the break, and a large reward is offered for Epler’s capture.
Miss Emma Applewhite aged sixty died when a fire destroyed her brother James Applewhite banker’s residence in Memphis She briefly escaped then returned for a portrait of her mother and perished after a window escape was cut off by her brother The incident occurred February 10 with firemen arriving too late HH Arnold was in town selling hog lard from a 640 pound animal delivering over 250 pounds of lard.
Marcus Cole, a white farmer, was arrested last week by Sheriff Hay on burglary charges with a Texas warrant. He received a habeas corpus hearing Saturday and was released when Houston officials failed to provide proper papers. Sheriff Hay then arrested another man for being a fugitive from justice and will hold a further hearing on the 75th of this month. Texas officials with requisition papers are expected within two days.
The Rek sian commissioners court held a brief session today with no major items on the agenda. Visitors included BR. W. Miller of Webs and W. B. Bruner of Calwathia, both in the city for the day.
Pensacola Florida news reports N Nassr plans an upcoming aeroplane trial design similar to Wright machines. Motor installation is pending after a Detriot firm inspects the current motor assembly. Nassr, with aviation experience, expects a successful early flight within ten days.
New Orleans February 12 The Arnold family ends the search for Dorothy Arnold as her mother Mrs Frances Arnold returns from Florence Italy with plans to consult about her daughter's disappearance. John Arnold says there is nothing new and warns reporters not to press his mother. In other items, Bryan dodges presidential speculation while a Montgomery incident shows a streetcar collision.
Route Agent J. T. Trawlek of the Southern Express Company notified yesterday that Brown and Flowers of the city were awarded the contract to erect a new express building at the Coney Joine depot. After bidding among several firms the Dothan contractors were deemed qualified, and work will begin immediately on a large and beautiful structure.
W F Masey of Starkville argues against chasing crop-specific fertilizer formulas. He advocates crop rotation, legume forage, and manure, aided by phosphoric acid and potash. He warns farmers to favor available phosphoric forms and to use high grade fertilizer when simply growing crops, noting many Southern farmers are “clean fertilizer crazy.”
The Talphas Society of Headland Avenue Baptist Church invites guests next Tuesday evening from 7 to 10. A port office, pantomime by girls, a beauty room, lemonade and candy will be available. Proceeds aim to fund church pews.
From Madrid Alabama February 18 1913 W Dorkam writes to B R Malone president of Dothan Guano Company praising Grange Mixture for cotton and corn yields. He notes using nine bags on five acres produced 2670 pounds lint cotton and seven racks on six acres of corn yielded forty five bushels per acre.
A telegram received in Dothan states Rev. C. A. Wikrama’gop, Charile, died yesterday at Ping Apple. He was about a year old and will be buried today at Mobile.
J W Harlson travels to Troy to hear Bryan speak. Breeder's Gazette reports nome plowing in Indiana with a gasoline engine. An outfit with 20 hp engine and four 16 inch plows, harrows behind, plowed mostly 40 acres in size. Two men cost 1 380 day and board, 12 acres per day, gas costs and expenses total around 66 cents per acre. Notes a rural comparison to Starkville and a Progressive Farmer line about plowing with one bore.
A Manchester Guardian summary recounts a tale from Portugal about King Joseph I who ordered all those of Jewish descent to wear yellow hats. Marquis de Pombal appeared with three yellow hats at court, saying the king’s command applied universally among notable Portuguese with Jewish blood. The scene ends with a witty exchange about who should be covered. The piece adds a social critique noting that many blame Providence for sickness while studying disease and neglecting preventive care.
