Mrs. J B Byrd Dies After Prolonged Illness

General Stanley Veteran Alabama Editor Dies at 91

General James Berney Stanley, 91, longtime publisher of the Greenville Advocate and Confederate veteran, died in Greenville. He founded the Advocate in 1880s, chaired editorial pages during Reconstruction, and served as National Press Association VP and state senator. He remained editor until illness.

General Stanley Dies After Long Illness in Greenville

General Stanley, health failing for two to three years, died at 2 Volock Sunday morning with family by his bedside. Born near Hayneville in Lowndes county in 1844, he served in the Civil War, was wounded at Franklin, and a brother was killed. He founded the Greenville Advocate after the war and later with his family ran the paper. He served on the Greenville school board and was a city councilman.

City officials finish boiler purchase under claim of emergency

City officials say a boiler for the municipal light and water plant was bought today from Orlando, Fla after an eight year search.
