A bygone notice explains a new and inexpensive money order type called Postal Notes. They will come in fixed denominations up to 10 dollars, with simplified sale and accounting at post offices. The system aims to offer a safe, economical way to send small sums without changing the conventional money order.
Dr. Ernest A. Childs pastor of Foster Street Methodist Church spoke to the De an Rotary Club at a noon meeting urging members to buy bonds. He questioned the patriotism of any American citizen who waits for a bond solicitor and cited sacrifices overseas to argue it should not be necessary to be urged to buy bonds.
Private first class James Y. Tomlin USMCR son of Mr and Mrs Eddie Tomlin of Ozark has been wounded in action. Mrs Frances Etheridge of Auburndale Florida has been notified that her husband Private Amos E Etheridge was slightly injured in action on November 15 in France.
News notes three items. First, President Roosevelt tells Congress that European liberated peoples may meet winter needs later this year, with UN relief funds and field supplies only just beginning. Second, the Dothan High School Junior Class will stage Orcrids and Onions, a three act farce, this Friday night in the auditorium. Admission is 30 cents. Cast includes Mack Sheehan, Rosemary Jonston, Press Thornton, Doers Adams, Luther Gouse, Narette Harris, Caraiyon Slam, Nell Scarborough, Ruyl, Siliba, Shirley Daak, and Sam Meeks.
In Athens, police clash with mourners after a mass funeral for 21 dead. ELAS fighters push from the city center, while British tanks disperse a raid on the Green Naval College at Piraeus. One killed, three wounded in renewed shooting near the railway station.
E T Riley author of Odds and Ends spoke at the Ozark Kiwanis Club meeting last week sharing curious facts from the section He described finding rope fragments 15 feet beneath the North Union bridge excavation near the railroad right of way and noted many other odd items with explanations still lacking.
Congress considers a Civil Aviation Administration forecast calling for 40 000 civilian airplanes within ten years and about 6 000 airports with total costs around 1.25 billion dollars. The plan envisions expanding airfields, boosting small private planes, and creating large airports while leveraging military pilots and students as future air users.
Corporal Edward G Givens 23 son of Mrs Effie Giens Head land route one serves with a tank unit of the Second Armored Division in Germany. He was wounded again on November 1 after first being wounded October 5 and receiving the Purple Heart. He is recuperating in hospital and has earned the Good Conduct Medal. Givens landed in France on D Day and has served with the First Army since. He farmed with his father before entering the Army two years ago.
Three defendants pleaded guilty in County Court before Judge Saxon P Payber and two appealed convictions in eight sessions. Pleas included Ike Barefield illegal whiskey sale, Adds Floyd reckless driving, Ed Jackson assault and battery with a weapon, plus Lloyd Purvis with an appeal notice and Albert Allums assault and battery. Two cases continued, four not pressed, one acquitted. Effective today Grade II tires may be transferred mounted and used without restriction while Grade I tires reclassified. December Grade I quota remains 2,000,000 limiting broader eligibility.
Allied forces press the Saar and Lorraine front as Seventh and French First Armies clear Vosges areas and push toward Karlsruhe. Patton's 95th Infantry breaches the Saarlautern area, advancing past Roden and Fraulautern amid scattered fire. Fifth Division and Sixth Cavalry overrun Eberherten and near Volkingen while Third and Seventh Armies push beyond the German frontier from Wolland to near Switzerland. German resistance remains, with pockets in Lorraine and Alsace and paratroop actions around Nimwegen.
Report details daylight raids by 4,000 bombers and fighters on Soest Karsel Giessen Mainz and Karlsruhe and Heilbronn with heavy targets including six rail centers. RAF and US formations pressed Ruhr rail lines, while losses were cited as incomplete but substantial, with 454 locomotives 1768 tanks and 2798 rail cars reported damaged or destroyed. A separate note mentions a bloody nose quoted from a 1st Army spokesman and a facial cleansing tip using almond oil.

Dr. J. A. Campbell was elected president of the Houston County Medical Society for the coming year. Dr. W. T. Burkett was re-elected secretary-treasurer. New officers include Dr. Paul Flowers as vice president and Dr. S. G. Landlais as board and censor. Dr. L. Hilson served as president this year and Dr. Campbell was vice-president.
Farm real estate values continued upward through the fourth quarter ending November with about a 3 percent countrywide rise. The largest increases occurred in the mountain and plateau regions. Muscadine grapes were referenced in the reader’s fragment.
