In Sumter County Alabama a 40 member grand jury continues examining the Emelle July Fourth disorders and laxity in prohibition enforcement. Circuit Solicitor W R Kimbrough resigns effective Sept 15 after seeking Democratic renomination. Circuit Clerk M C Jarman resigns effective Sept 1 after ten years in office. Sheriff W T Seales says he will not resign. The probe follows a deadly battery incident involving Clarence Boyd and the Robertson family.

Woodcock starts cleaning house in Prohibition Office

Prohibition Director Woodcock announced suspensions in Albany and Washington. George Golding, prohibition administrator, is under indefinite suspension on charges of personal misconduct filed by several stenographers, with the civil service commission to decide. Two other agents, Robert Myrtle and Basil Quinn, received five day suspensions for traffic rule disputes and confrontations with motorists. Woodcock vows further action if needed.

Retail food prices drop 2.5 percent in July

Washington reports a 2.5 percent decline in retail food prices for July from the prior month. Twenty-six food items fell, with overall pricing 9 percent below a year ago. potatoes and cabbage lead with 21 percent drop, plate beef down 7 percent, and many meats vegetables and staples down 5 to under 0.5 percent. Eggs butter and canned salmon rose, while 13 staples remained unchanged.

Troopers Continue Search for Attacker in New Jersey Parks

Louredlyn mob lynches accused attacker in North Carolina

Oliver Moore a 29 year old black man charged with assaulting two young white girls, was seized from Edgecombe jail by about 200 masked men. He was hanged from a tree near the Wilson county line and shot with bullets. This marked North Carolina's first lynching since 1921 and followed a preliminary hearing on the two child victims, Ethel Morgan aged five and Luchie Morgan aged seven.

Malaria Control Committee Forming in Houston County

The Eagle reports plans to form a county malaria control committee to work with the local health unit. State workers P A Stephens and R C Fuller note 615 current cases in 130 square miles, down from 1181 last year, with September seen as peak. Ten bodies found in Blakeburn mine disaster

Ten bodies were recovered at Blakeburn mine last night, raising the death toll from the Wednesday explosion to thirteen. Rescue workers found the latest victims on No 1 stope and near the pit port. no identifications had been made and caveins at the stope hinder further recovery for days.

Burning airplane passengers saved during emergency landing

Bernard Rawson, 22, a Bay City Michigan pilot, safely landed a burning cabin monoplane from 3000 feet after passengers Cleo Slagle Florence Davis George Commons and Bousfield Ward used fire extinguishers to contain the fire. The aircraft exploded soon after landing. all occupants suffered only scratches. All passengers resided in Bay City.
