Road foreman buys tires for county use dispute at Alabama board

An Alabama county board of revenue audited accounts and found road foreman Doc Burkett bought tires for his private car from Alabama Machinery & Supply without order and charged them to the county. Burkett offered to repay after admitting the error. The board also noted prior January tire charges and a second road crew member Leo Burkett charged tires to the county. A county representative claimed Burkett acted without an order, while the supplier said Burkett purchased tires elsewhere, unaware of irregularities. The board ordered no further charges to the county without official board authorization. A total of 16000 dollars was paid out by the board during the three-day meeting, largely for road and bridge work. A Bay Springs road reconstruction project was approved, extending about 12 miles, funded by county relief for eradication work, which has cost the county an estimated 73000 dollars over 12 years. The sheriff's court room was slated for exclusive use by the Board of Revenue. The meeting also noted Pershing’s car accident in Washington.
