Mass Meeting Urges Relief to Alabama Schools

About 590 attendees at the courthouse mass meeting urged Governor Miller and the Alabama legislature to act quickly to fund and balance school budgets so public schools can open their fall terms. Dr L W Dockery pressed the crisis while C L Tompkins warned politicians against shifting blame. The resolution pledged cooperation with state leaders and called attention to teacher employment and rising juvenile delinquency if schools stay underfunded.

First 1932 Cotton Ginned In Geneva

Geneva county reports its first bale of the 1932 crop was ginned at the Samson gin and peanut company. It was grown by Brasington 24 Pridgen and sold for 10 cents per pound.

Slaying Climax in Birmingham Family Feud

In Birmingham Alabama George Vining was killed by his stepson Cecil Carter after months of family feuding. Carter fired five shots as Vining advanced after a car encounter. Carter is jailed on murder charges.

Criminal Court to Open Monday in Geneva Alabama

Special Judge E S Thigpen will convene Geneva county circuit court for a three day session starting Monday morning. Forty six cases are slated for trial on charges from forgery to murder including nine prohibition cases. The murder case involves Charles Council charged with killing the town marshal at Black about a year ago. Council has recently been discharged as a son from an asylum after being held in the county jail for several months.

Montgomery Aug. 6 AP Five new faces will appear in the Alabama legislature when it convenes Aug. 16 to seek a remedy for the state's financial ills. Salvation Army Drive Set For September 12 19

The Salvation Army advisory board voted to hold its annual drive in Do than from September 12 to 19. J. L. Vaughn resigned as chair but remains a member. H. H. Brown was named chairman. W. W. Five Young Men Fined After North Foster Street Fight

Five youths faced charges from drunkenness to assault after a free for all on North Foster street Thursday night. Ted Wilson’s breaking into a car charge was dismissed. Ben Dempsey and Ed Whatley received 24 dollar fines for assault and drunkenness. Gordon Melton 12 dollars for drunkenness and assault. El Green 12 dollars for drunkenness and car breaking. Whatley Melton and Green were placed in the stockade for nonpayment. Dempsey sustained knife injuries from Whatley during the altercation.

Law Violators Contribute $4145 in July in Montgomery

In Montgomery Alabama law violators added 4145 to the city coffers in July by cash or hard labor. The police reported 733 arrests and 337 convictions for the month. Leading offenses included traffic violations drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

62 Cities Insure Big Funds Outlay

The Commerce Department says 62 cities pledged in early 1922 to insure expenditure of 41.6 million dollars on property improvement and labor. Ajax Hosiery mills in Phoenixville and Pottstown to return 1,500 jobs full time by August 15. Boston reports 15 million plus pounds of wood sold in the streets with forecasts as high as 25.9 million. National Cooperative Wool Marketing notes a market not seen since 1920. New York July stock and bond financing reaches 149.59 million for seven months. Raw silk imports in July rise 5.90 bales from June.

Warning in state against 12 firms listed unauthorized

Alabama public warned against buying insurance from 12 companies deemed unauthorized by the state insurance bureau. Officials said these firms had not qualified to operate in Alabama and would not be responsible in state courts for claims. Eldridge Price a Negro farmer of Houston county Indicted in seed loan deals pleaded guilty Thursday before Federal Judge Charles B Kennamer in Montgomery. He was fined $1 for forging Will Oates's name on two seed loan checks totaling $93 and charged with conspiracy. the forgery and conspiracy counts were dismissed after plea.

Minor Knife Cut Fatal to Man

James Grantham, 26, of Dethan route five, died at a Jeothan hospital after a short Vinere from Woodpeleoring. He accidentally cut his knee with a knife. authorities ruled the wound fatal. He leaves three brothers, Sidney Clayton and Ruster Granthara, and two sisters, Mere J. M. Starling and Mrs. Ruty Pittman. Libby Holman to surrender within a week
