County attorney Phillip Oldham outlined a tangled romance involving the preacher and his 19 year old bride. Letters in verse to and from the minister were presented as evidence. Bernie admitted writing his present wife before the death last March. He was jailed for investigation while his young wife was released to her mother. The attorney said she was a victim of circumstances. Oldham noted the minister and his young wife admitted a prior love affair but denied knowledge of poisoning the first wife.
