Houston's Gas Tax Collector Fees May Be Cut
Houston County's gas tax collector Lonnie A Granger faces a sharp fee reduction as county commissioners may act at the next session and state law may cap the five percent collection fee. The act, authorized in 1936, assigns one cent per gallon from motor fuels to municipalities. the collector audits stations, keeps books, deposits funds, and issues checks. Granger's average fee over six months was $407.97 monthly for three to four workdays plus a part time clerk’s hours. Senator Hardwick proposes a state limit of $200 monthly, shifting control from commissioners. The paper notes the position is termed political patronage by Probate Judge Albert Logue.

Folsom's Clerk Hire Spending Is Upheld
The State Supreme Court in a 3 2 decision ruled there is no limit to money the Governor can spend from the temporary clerk fund. Justice Foster wrote the majority opinion upholding a lower court ruling. Dissenters Lawson and Simpson argued for a $3 500 yearly cap. The 1947 Legislature set a 3 500 limit in the general appropriation and tried to place the same cap on an unlimited old continuing appropriation. The governor, James E. Folsom, vetoed the latter measure but has spent more than 310 500 a year from the fund. The court said the appropriation bill alone did not show a cap intended by the Legislature.
