Lawson Gregory, Abbeville's oldest active merchant, claims to be 79 though his age is disputed. He began in 1900 when the town faced a major fire, recalling a store that sold medicine and tools with a doorfront iron market. He prides himself on posting his ledgers nightly and notes his long tenure alongside a traveling salesman observing his quick mental pricing.
