Counties May Get Postwar Roads Free

In a postwar roads aid plan, counties may receive free highway construction under an agreement involving state officials and the Sumte Highway Department. The bill aims to use funds or gifts to support road projects, with the legislature to decide funding and oversight.

County plan seeks state funding match for road program

A proposed state measure would allocate 2 1/2 million dollars to be held in reserve for 67 counties until an equal federal sum becomes available under the latest Highway Act. Rep John White of Uniontown, executive secretary of the Association of County Commissioners, said the money would be shared equally to cover counties' first year costs. Highway Director G R Swaft endorsed the plan, urged by county officials amid strained finances in several counties.

Professor Expects Peace Difficulties in World War II Era

Dr Joseph M Ray a University of Alabama professor of service and economy told a Birmingham audience that peace machinery cannot end immediate postwar strife due to human desires. He argued Germany and Japan must accept their roles in world affairs and urged shared responsibility among great powers as at San Francisco. He stressed no sympathy for Nazis or Japanese but called for treating others as brothers.
