Playground Opens for Children Behind Eagle Building

Garden club sponsors a new public playground behind the Eagle building with nine white benches under spring-decorated trees. The park is open now though swings and slides are not yet installed. City unemployed workers built benches and cleaned grounds, with thanks to Barnes Lumber Co. and other local firms for donations and use of property.

Two Small Fires Cause Minimal Damage

A short circuit on a car owned by policeman James Herring prompted the fire department to rush to West Troy Street last night with no damage. Earlier today an awning at the Coca Cola plant caught fire from sparks and sustained slight damage.

Police responded to a disruption at a Dothan residence as a large gathering of dogs created a commotion. Officers worked to disperse the busy crowd and restore quiet.

High Court Upholds Man's 10 Year Manslaughter Sentence

Wiley Coulliette, sentenced in Houston circuit court on March 31, 1931, to 10 years in the state penitentiary for manslaughter, has lost a second appeal. The state supreme court affirmed the circuit court, reversing the earlier reversal and remand for a new trial. The case stems from the ax slaying of Bee Hall near Cottonwood on January 26, 1928. Coulliette is free on a 3000 bond, with bondsmen to surrender him within 15 days for transport to the penitentiary. He resided near Ashford.

Florida writer critically shot in Miami home

Haden Clarke a 31 year old aviation pilot and free lance writer was shot in a house he shared with Captain W N Lancaster former British flyer and Mrs Jessie Keith Miller Austrian aviatrix. Police said he may not survive the head wound while Lancaster and Keith Miller are being investigated. Clarke’s mother said he had financial worries.

Believe narcotic ring is uncovered

Federal agents said they believed they uncovered a narcotic ring after the arrest of two men in Memphis on Wednesday night. Leo Warton of Joplin Missouri and J F Kirk were seized with private papers and contraband drugs. About $10000 worth of narcotics was found in Kirks apartment and another arrest occurred in Louisville. Police reported $1000 worth of narcotics in Wartons hostel room and agents hoped to close in on larger caches.

Absentee ballots for the state Democratic primary on May 3 are being mailed to Houston voters. Ballots are available only by written request or in person at the probate office. Requests must be received at least five days before election day.

Progress Report On Houston County Audit Due Friday

A. D. Teal the Houston County auditor will present a progress report on the county books at a special county commissioners meeting Friday. Teal has been auditing since last June and said the report awaits several attorney general rulings before completion.

Indicted Woman Pleads Guilty in Local Court

Gertrude Sims a Negro woman indicted by the grand jury here pleaded guilty in circuit court and was sentenced to one to two years in the state penitentiary for burglary involving a brick thrown through a Dollar Store window and theft of shoes. Carlie McRae, indicted for transporting, also pled guilty and drew one to two years. The grand jury met for a special session to allow prisoners in the county jail to plead guilty, nine of sixteen indictments resulting in guilty pleas and sentences.

Fire damages truck on Montgomery highway incident

Fire on Montgomery highway at 145 p m damaged the front seat of a truck at Clo Beating plant. Gasoline spilled on the factory area but the blaze caused little damage and was extinguished with chemicals.

A large crowd attended the opening revival at First Baptist Church last Wednesday night led by Dr L W Dockery with Big Nason of Kuslusco Miss in charge of singing. Services run nightly at 7 30 p m through Sunday night May 1 with officials predicting bigger crowds as the revival progresses.

Funeral of Auto Victim Conducted

Mrs. Martha Amny Tindell 77 died Tuesday after being struck by a car on a highway near her home one mile north of Dothan. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Big Fourth cemetery with burial at the family plot.

Dothan High School's baseball team committed eight errors and made only five hits as Bainbridge, Georgia defeated the Tigers 14 to 8 at the stadium. The setback, their second loss of the season, followed a 6 to 2 loss in the season opener. Dothan had planned a return tilt at Ozark after this city game.

A man named Peavis, Negro, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday, pleaded guilty to a burglary charge, was tried, and sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary.

A Norfolk and Western passenger train 20 miles east of Portsmouth Ohio wrecked by switch bolts removed by saboteur. Engineer J H Myers and Fireman J J Kemp of Portsmouth died. One youth, 18, arrested for questioning. Two mail clerks and an express messenger injured but expected to recover.

In Birmingham Alabama authorities charge widow of carpenter John Fields and farmer W C Baird with his murder based on statements from Howard Baird 17 who aided the alleged plot and witnessed the shooting near Republic. Insurance proceeds totaling 2000 dollars were noted as payable to the wife.

Memphis Seed Loan Agent In Wiregrass

J. W. Craig, field agent of the Memphis seed loan office, works in the Wiregrass aiding farmers to obtain seed loans, recording mortgages, and receiving checks. He oversees Houston, Dale, Henry and Coffee counties. Farmers were urged to apply before April 30 as loans will not be available afterward.
