Beneficial Insects Found to Fight Pests Abroad

In 1928 a seven month Australia tour led to discovery of two species used to control mealybugs and cottony cushion scale. Trips to North Africa India and China sought enemies of red and black scale. South America and South Africa later yielded enemies of the red and black scale. Every pest has its natural enemy which can be propagated and used successfully on the side of mankind.

California May Import Bugs In Its War On Citrus Pests

Harold Compere of the University of California citrus station and his wife Joan depart from San Pedro for Africa on a two year mission to seek parasites to combat red scale and red spiders threatening California citrus. They will travel via Capetown and Kenya to Mombasa, using South African laboratories and United States testing to propagate parasites. The expedition is funded by the university's agricultural research program.
