House approves work relief bill in conference report
Washington April 5 AP that the conference agreement on the 4800 million work relief program was approved today by the House with Senate action needed to speed the bill to President Roosevelt. The vote followed sharp debate as lawmakers attacked the measure and a compromise ended a weeklong deadlock over a labor amendment. Leaders hoped to ship the bill by plane to Roosevelt, whose relief funds were near exhaustion. The pact lets Roosevelt decide if wages in materials count toward the 25 percent labor goal, and extends the Civilian Conservation Corps to cover work since March 31 for two more years.
