Council Tries New Route To Stoker Contract

City council seeks to empower President W F Martin to sign a stokers contract, aiming to repeal conflicting ordinances. The plan was blocked by opposition to suspending rules, with a special meeting set for 7:15 tomorrow to reconsider. The measure would replace mayoral signing with Martins authority and would cover three stokers for the municipal light and water plant at about 22 800 dollars, over a competing bid of 13 500.

Council fights over Hoffman stokers vote

Three councilmen led by I C Bates opposed suspension of the rules on the Hoffman stokers purchase as six others voted to suspend. The dissenters were Bates Arthur Joe Grant and S W Burkett with opponents Martin D M Jerkins T H McIntyre J P Botts B H Lisenby and J J Newton who have backed the project. Bates argued against big expenditures urging cheaper current through Shoals and TVA actions.

Nome, Alaska April 3 AP Two air planes were sent to rescue 89 Russians stranded on Arctic ice 350 miles northwest of Nome.
