Dixon to Host Soviet English Teacher Exchange Plan

Dixon School Board will consider approving a teacher exchange with Dickson, Siberia, modeled on prior programs with France and Japan. A Soviet English teacher is expected to arrive around Oct. 15, stay through April 15, and be paid a 150 dollar monthly stipend.

14 year old coin collector named district ANA delegate

August Gus Jackson, a 14 year old Amboy High School freshman, was named district delegate for northwest Illinois to the American Numismatic Association. He met experts at conventions in Pittsburgh and Colorado Springs, writes weekly for the Amboy News, and collects British, Canadian, and U.S. coins while finishing a 1909 penny set. He plans to attend the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and aims to become a nuclear physicist or journalist.

Bush Urges Students In Drug Fight Address

President Bush in a televised White House address urged 47 million students not to ignore drug use saying the day of the dealer is near end and every drug dollar fuels killing. He cited a $7.9 billion anti drug plan and criticized Democrats for price tag politics while calling for swift action.

Poll shows dramatic leap in drug concern

A Times CBS News poll shows Americans boosting concern about drugs from 22 percent in July to 64 percent last week, the largest single-issue rise since 1976. Most approve Bush’s $7.8 billion anti-drug plan, with about seven in ten backing the strategy and 60 percent believing it would reduce the drug problem. The survey of 824 adults was conducted Sept 6–8, amid heavy drug coverage and reports of warfare with drug lords in Colombia.

Dozen Nominated for Citizen of the Year Banquet

About a dozen persons have been nominated for the Dixon area Citizen of the Year as the eighth annual banquet nears on Oct 20 at the Brandywine Inn. Tickets are 16.50 each, including prime rib dinner. Dan Gable will speak. nominations close Oct 2. Last year’s winners were Helen and Elwood Cruse.
