SVCC to receive literacy grant funds
Sauk Valley Community College will be granted 47000 as part of the Secretary of State literacy program. The total 129000 will be shared by three area colleges Kishwaukee College will get 37000 and Highland Community College 45000. SVCC runs VITAL Volunteers In Teaching Adult Literacy which has aided over 550 students with 419 trained tutors.

At Nickelsdorf near Vienna the first of about 6,000 East Germans crossed into Austria as Hungary opened its border. Guards processed papers while cars carried families toward West Germany. East Germany condemned the move as organized human smuggling. Austrian Red Cross aided travelers with maps coffee meals and gas money before the four hour drive to the west.
