Oregon votes down merging of schools

Oregon voters reject a referendum to consolidate their district with Mount Morris by 1,084 to 625, while Mount Morris approves 953 to 197. The measure failed because a majority was required in both districts. Officials cite a 38 cent tax rise in Oregon and 13 cent rise in Mount Morris as key factors.

Gehlbach leads 3 newcomers onto Dixon board

Dixon voters elected newcomers Gary Gehlbach Sandra Burrows and William Zinnen along with incumbent president Dave Keeley to the Dixon School Board defeating incumbents and several challengers. Gehlbach led with 1538 votes Burrows 1458 Zinnen 1403 Keeley 1196. Gehlbach Burrows Zinnen pledged board priorities including selecting a superintendent and reassessing district certification amid financial difficulty.

Four Ogle officials found innocent in sex bias suit

Four Ogle County officials and a public defender were acquitted of all counts in a sex discrimination case filed by former Oregon assistant public defender Carol Ellerby. The jury delivered the verdict at 8 15 p.m. after deliberating since the previous afternoon. Ellerby claimed she was denied a public defender job due to her sex and questioned biased interview inquiries. The court noted no punitive damages due to lack of proof of evil intent or reckless disregard.

Dixon Theatre fund drive nears $160000 milestone

Dixon Theatre Sena Inc. aims to raise 400000 locally to unlock 3 million state funds for the renovation. Director Bob Bloemker says donations are rising but fall short of the goal as a February 14 deadline nears, with work slated to start then and an anticipated July 1991 completion.

Bush signs debt ceiling extension to avert default

President Bush signed a law extending the government's debt authority for 11 months as Congress approved the measure amid a looming midnight deadline. The House passed the bill 269 to 99 after Senate approval, preventing historic default and setting up a Thursday Treasury securities auction.

Secord pleads guilty to lying to Congress in Iran Contras case

Retired General Richard V. Secord admitted lying to congressional investigators about funds from The Enterprise used to aid the Nicaraguan Contras and the Iran arms trading. Judge Aubrey Robinson allowed him to remain free pending a pre sentence report while clarifying potential penalties up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
