Frenzied final day of Bush and Dukakis campaign

George Bush and Michael Dukakis spent a frenetic final day before voting Tuesday. Dukakis campaigned across multiple states including Ohio Missouri California and Iowa while Bush hit St Louis Ohio Michigan and Houston. Polls showed tight national margins with mixed readings on Dukakis momentum as both leaders urged supporters to vote and Reagan prepared a California closing push.

Turnout Seen At Least Seventy Percent In Local Elections

Lee County Clerk Rosemary Emmert and Ogle County Clerk Jean Wolfe expect about 70 percent turnout for Tuesday’s general election with 19 031 registered voters in Lee County and about 23 000 in Ogle County 24 000 on rolls earlier. Absentee ballots total 825 in Lee and 1124 in Ogle. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and mild temps in the 50s.

Voter Registration and Ballots Rise in Dixon County

In Dixon County, new voters have been registered and 938 absentee ballots received. Emmert notes improving interest as campaigns focus on issues, especially education, with turnout expected high. Wolfe cites higher registration and predicts 75 to 80 percent turnout. Polls open 6 am to 7 pm Tuesday.

Gunman arrested near Bush at California rally

A man pulled a starter's pistol from his waistband near George Bush at a Woodland Hills rally. John Junot, 40, was detained by the Secret Service and LAPD after it was found the weapon fired blanks. He faces federal charges for impeding government business with a potential fine and jail time.

First measurable snowfall brings Dixon residents out

The first measurable snowfall of the year sent Dixonites outside this weekend for fun and work. .6 inch fell Saturday with a trace more on Sunday. Brian and Erin Demmer, and Tony Wulf appear in photos while others clear snow. Today’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 40s with rain showers tonight.

Sakharov arrives in U S seeking peace and dialogue

Soviet nuclear scientist Andrei Sakharov arrives in Boston on his first trip outside the USSR in 30 years. He plans to visit relatives seek medical care and meet President Reagan while urging both nations to work toward a world without war. He is greeted by Tatiana Yankelevich Efrem and their children at Logan Airport.
