Watt Defends Housing Consulting in Influence Scandal Hearing
Former Interior Secretary James Watt, testifying before a House Government Operations subcommittee, denies wrongdoing while defending a $300,000 HUD housing project consulting fee. He says $169,000 was kept and the rest shared with associates, and he arranged access to HUD officials to aid a Maryland developer. Critics allege influence peddling and favoritism in the agency’s approvals.

Pope urges unity as he visits Nordic churches
Pope John Paul II urged reconciliation between Catholics and Lutherans during a Nordic tour. At Uppsala Cathedral he told 2,000 Swedish clerics that 400 years of separation requires time for healing, and he urged groups of students to serve as a bridge between East and West. An armed security guard restrained a man who rushed the pope at an open air mass attended by about 8,000. The intruder, 28, from the Maranata movement, was detained and released after questioning.
