Dannemeyer amendment on school prayer sparks House vote

In a slow session on May 9, Rep. William Dannemeyer proposed blocking federal funds to any state or local education agency that denies or hinders voluntary prayer in public schools. The House passed the amendment 269 to 125, triggering a debate on church and state. The piece argues the amendment weakens individual prayer rights and risks establishment of religion, urging neutrality in public schools and distinction between teacher and chaplain led prayers.

Military pensions and ex wives a 1980s legal fight

A 1981 Supreme Court ruling barred divorced wives from sharing military retirement pay. Congress passed the Former Spouse Protection Act in 1982 to allow half of the pension earned during marriage in community property states, but the law defined pension components narrowly. The court later held that ex-spouses receive no portion of disability benefits, prompting calls for clearer legislation. Justice O Connor dissented urging a broad reading to fulfill the act’s intent. Congress is urged to redraft to apply ordinary divorce laws to military benefits again.

Putting some sense in our taxing system

Copley News Service reports that IRS fringe benefit rules unfairly tax transit passes and company van pools while free parking remains untaxed. Rep. Matsui introduces HR 2265 to remove taxes on van pools and allow up to 60 dollars monthly transit subsidies tax free, arguing energy savings and cleaner air offset revenue losses.
