Town Clerk Boos Dies After Illness in Rockford

Dixon Township Clerk William Boos age 53 of 822 Hemlock Ave died Tuesday in Rockford. He began his third term as clerk on May 1 and followed his late father Walter Boos. He earlier served as town board trustee. Township offices will be closed Friday in his memory. Officials have 60 days to select a successor. A full obituary is on page 14.

Pope John Paul II warns of hate and conflict threat to mankind

In an outdoor Danish mass Pope John Paul II warned 13,000 Catholics that prejudice conflict and hatred threaten the world’s future. He spoke at Odense Monastery before a Nordic tour leg, urging Denmark’s 28,000 Catholics to view isolation as a challenge and stressing that modern imperialism fuels Third World poverty.

Turbulence Jolts United DC-10 Over Kansas Injures 33

A United Airlines DC-10 flying from Los Angeles to Chicago hit sudden severe turbulence over Garden City Kansas at 37 000 feet. Thirty three passengers were hospitalized with mostly bumps and scratches while the flight continued to O Hare. Eight ambulances met the jet at the gate and transported injured to area hospitals officials said.

Oregon veterans memorial aims to honor World War II Korea Vietnam

Vietnam veteran Marvin Kunde leads a community effort to build an Oregon veterans memorial to honor World War II Korean and Vietnam veterans. The $75,000 donation funded project features a 40 foot granite spire on a star base with space for flags and a 100 year time capsule pending county approval and a June 28 committee meeting.
