Scott Isaacs 14 of Littleton Colorado won after 13 rounds defeating Ojaf Tejani 12 of Chattanooga Tennessee in a record field of 222 contestants. Isaacs earned 1500 dollars and a chance to meet Vice President Quayle. Tejani received 1000 dollars.

Four dissident nuns who shut themselves in the Monastery of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel near Morris Township face a formal dismissal from the Carmelite order after the Vatican denied their appeal to leave the infirmary. The diocese says the decision rests with the prioress and sisters, with Bishop Rodimer viewing no recourse. Five sisters begun their protest in October over the appointment of a new prioress and changes to centuries-old rules.
