Dixon school board asks ISBE to decertify finances

The Dixon School Board voted unanimously to seek decertification by the Illinois State Board of Education, contending the district no longer meets criteria for financial difficulty after amending the 1988-89 budget. It reports a $1 million cash receipts plan by June 30 and funds from working cash bonds, arguing the ISBE guidelines are insulting and unrealistic.

Tax plan unlikely to push Illinois from moderate to high burden

Illinois tax watchdogs say House Speaker Michael Madigan's 18.4 percent income tax increase would not move the state into high tax ranks. They note Illinois already has a moderate burden, ranking 17th per capita overall and 33rd relative to income, with possible room to raise taxes without toppling into higher standings. The groups caution the report is not an endorsement of the hike.

Dixon site eyed for women prisoners in state plan

Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Nic Howell said Dixon Correctional Center is among 13 sites considered for a new women’s prison facility. He stressed no decision or timetable exists, while work to add about 200 cells at Dixon could raise capacity to roughly 1,200 if funded. The plan faces funding questions as other sites may be used or new facilities built.
