Soviet teacher calls Dixon visit like a fairy tale

Nadezhda Naumenko, a 42 year old English teacher from Dixon's sister city in Siberia, described her Dixon introduction as "almost like a fairy tale" during a city hall news conference. She will spend four months studying local teaching methods and sharing Russian culture, hoping to inspire a Russian language course in the Dixon schools. Naumenko arrived from 55 degree Dixon warmth after minus 35 degree Dickson travel, and noted Dickson's flat living and trees contrast with her hometown.

Polo OKs additional spending

The city approved a supplemental appropriation Tuesday raising budget items by 7.5 percent. Administration rose about 30 percent and ESDA 19 percent, offset by revenues from an ESDA auction and other small increases. Major costs included repairs at city hall such as a new roof and windows and interior exterior painting. ESDA acquisitions also boosted its budget.

Polo teachers fail to take ratification vote

Polo teachers still have no settled contract talks after Christmas. Chief negotiator Deb Cheek says language items believed removed were still in the proposal and salary disputes remain. No new mediation session is scheduled as teachers cite exhausted negotiations but deny a strike.
