North charges dropped in Iran Contra case by federal judge
UPI reports Judge Gerhard Gesell dismissed the two main felony charges against Oliver North after Attorney General Thornburgh swore that pursuing the case could risk identifiable damage to national security. North still faces 12 counts with a Jan. 31 trial date, including obstruction of Congress and illegal gratuities.

Bernhard Goetz, the 1984 subway gunman who shot four youths, is sentenced in New York to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine for illegal gun possession. Libya returns body of American flier in 1986 bombing
Libyan officials handed the coffin of Air Force Captain Paul F. Lorence to the Vatican envoy in Tripoli, then to U.S. authorities in Rome. Lorence and 17 other F-111 crews bombed Tripoli and Benghazi on April 14 15, 1986, with his body later recovered at Al Zawiyah.

Reagan vows to keep fighting abortion until Roe v Wade overturned
President Reagan, honored by the Knights of Malta, pledged to continue the battle against abortion until the Supreme Court reverses Roe v. Wade. He warned that when Roe is toppled a new abortion debate will rise in state houses, urging the faithful to join the life voice. The speech came as the court agreed to hear the first major abortion test since Kennedy’s confirmation.

Prairie dog plague hits Rocky Mountain Arsenal prairie dogs
At the Rocky Mountain Arsenal near Denver more than 20 percent of prairie dogs have died from bubonic plague. Army Captain Andrew Kingery noted about 1,000 of 5,500 acres affected and said cold weather has halted spread while fleas died with the plague. Eagles rely on the area but are not affected. Officials will monitor and may spray pesticides when warmer weather returns.
