Work on the park beside Ronald Reagan’s boyhood home progresses with lighting and two flag poles recently installed. The Reagan statue was donated by Wayne Andreas of Decatur to the Reagan Home Foundation. Dedication is planned later this year with hopes for Reagan’s attendance.
Pam Herbon’s 1976 Granada sank into a weakened road section on Long Street at Fourth Avenue after a water leak under the roadway washed out soil beneath the slab. No injuries. The car remained drivable and was being checked for damage. Water Department officials traced the leak to an accidentally opened valve and planned to plug it when weather permits.
Dixon City Council discussed replacing the commission form used since 1911 with a centralized manager system. Professor Banovetz and City Manager Mays weighed pros and cons, noting liability, efficiency, and the referendum requirements for changing the form or hiring an administrator.
A four hour TV miniseries on Lt. Col. Oliver North begins production this week in Los Angeles. Titled Guts and Glory The Rise and Fall of Oliver North the project stars David Keith as North with Barnard Hughes as William Casey Peter Boyle as John Poindexter and Paul Dooley as Bud McFarland Amy Stock-Poynton plays Fawn Hall. Production will move to Washington at month end.
President Reagan plans a televised farewell from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. CST, focusing on his eight years and future goals. Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the speech will be a personal look at his accomplishments, beliefs, and the political priorities that have shifted.
President Reagan issued his eighth and last annual economy report praising free markets and limited government. He credited a seven year expansion to sound policy and supply side economics, noting 19 million jobs since 1982 and unemployment under 5 percent.
