Cracks Found in SRP Cooling Pipes Raise Restart Risk
SRP engineers at Aiken, South Carolina report 27 cracks in reactor cooling systems at the Savannah River plant, far higher than prior counts. Fifteen cracks, including a three inch long one, are in pipes delivering coolant to K reactor, potentially delaying the restart of three 1950s units vital for tritium production for the US nuclear arsenal. Energy Department officials say inspection programs must be reassessed and piping replacement timelines weighed, though current impact on restart remains uncertain.
