Home method for hard tanning deer hides
A guide explains hard tanning at home, noting it is easier and cheaper than soft tanning. After fleshing out the hide, it uses a solution of alum salt washing soda and water, with the hide submerged for six to eight days to set the tan.
Skinning and tanning tips plus local deer hunting records
Instructions describe hide removal, borax tanning for 2 4 days, rinsing, stretching and drying a deer hide, and notes on avoiding sun and heat. The piece also reports Joe Rakowski of Ohio with a large Lee County deer rack and Tony Litts of Amboy bow hunting a 200 pound field dressed back with an eight pointer.
