Dense fog on New Year’s Eve and Monday morning froze in the northern Illinois suburbs. Overnight freezing temperatures crystallized the fog into a spectacular frost display, visible at the Morris estate on North Brinton in Dixon and similar sites in the area.
Freezing rain and glaze left area roads slick as Dixon Public School District canceled classes using the first of five emergency days. Schools Saint Marys Saint Annes in Dixon and Faith Christian in Grand Detour also closed. Weather officials warned of continued slick spots despite early road improvement and forecast very cold temperatures with highs near 10 to mid-20s.
Washington awaits the 101st Congress opening with Bush set to swear in senators while tax increases dominate the agenda. Republicans push for spending cuts through a flexible freeze, while Democrats enjoy slight majorities and seek a $30 to $40 billion reduction to hit a $100 billion deficit target, risking automatic sequester if unmet.
Dixon City Council will consider rezoning a vacant lot at West Fourth Street and Lincoln Avenue to B-2 for a Stop and Go store opposite Lincoln School. The meeting at 7:30 p.m. at city hall will likely refer to the Plan Commission. Also on the agenda Mayor James Dixon’s request to commit about $50,000 in local funds, added to $600,000-$625,000 in state money, for a flood retention pond on the southeast side of Dixon to curb Fargo Creek basin flooding. A yearend building permit report is expected to show construction in the city totaling $9,180,858, the highest in at least 18 years.
In Tunis, U S and PLO officials met informally over the weekend to discuss issues including the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. Ambassador Robert Pelletreau listened as Hakam Balaawi introduced the PLO to the U S ambassador, noting willingness to share information, with no direct request made for PLO help in the investigation.
A new aftershock struck Leninakan on New Year’s Eve killing at least six and briefly halting relief work. Officials report 24,888 bodies recovered in Armenia, about half of the original 55,000 estimate, as Spitak recovery chief notes the last hospital admission was 10 days ago. Soviet authorities suspend search for survivors and move to rehabilitation.
