Illinois schools rely more on local taxes than state funds

Illinois public schools now rely more on local tax revenues than a decade ago, with the state share dropping from 43.9 to 39.3 percent. Local funding rose from 47.3 to 52.7 percent, while total education spending reached over 2.67 billion dollars for 1987-88. The report notes uncertain state aid in recent years and ongoing calls for more funding and a tax increase to support education.

Sterling suspect arrested in murder case in Sterling

A 31-year-old Mexican national Hilario Reyes Lopez is held on 500000 bond for the murder of Leonel Pacheo Leyte 27 at 2008 Fourth Ave Sterling. Leyte died from blunt trauma and stab wounds after an argument over money. Lopez was arrested at O Hare Airport by Chicago police on a Whiteside County warrant.

Reagan vows to pursue Pan Am 103 bombers and tighten security

President Reagan pledges to catch those responsible for the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and bring them to justice. Unemployment Edges Up In Rock River Valley Areas

Area jobless rates rose modestly in November in Lee and Ogle counties, with Lee up from 6.1 to 7.1 percent and Ogle from 4.9 to 6.9 percent. Officials say seasonal trends and small layoffs explain the gains, while year over year rates remain lower. National and state figures show slight changes, with Illinois at 6.5 percent.

Judge blocks ComEd rate hike in Illinois court ruling

Snow removal warning issued by Dixon streets chief
