Paramount to argue Buchwald plagiarized Chaplin film
In a breach of contract case, Paramount seeks to prove Art Buchwald devised his "King for a Day" story by copying Charlie Chaplin's 1957 film "A King in New York." Judge Harvey Schneider allowed the line of defense as closing arguments approach, with Buchwald denying any plagiarism and Paramount outlining its theory through witnesses, including Arsenio Hall. The trial follows Buchwald's 1983 sale of the story and Paramount's 1985 decision to drop options after spending on related scripts. "Coming to America" later became a major 1988 box office success.
