U.S. faces tritium shortage claims from Savannah River
A U.S. Energy Department report to Congress warns Savannah River Plant in Aiken South Carolina may never produce enough tritium for the nation's nuclear arsenal. The New York Times cites a delay until late 1989 for safety and modernization work, with production concerns tied to earlier reactor closures and downgraded operation. Estimates place 1990–2010 costs at about 81 billion dollars to repair, decontaminate, and modernize, totaling roughly 250 billion dollars in 1990 dollars for weapons and plant upkeep.
