China India seek a new beginning in relations
Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was warmly welcomed by Chinese Premier Li Peng in Beijing as both leaders spoke of a new start after decades of border disputes. A 19 gun salute rang out at Tiananmen Square and a military band played both nations anthems before formal talks in the Great Hall of the People. Gandhi, the first Indian premier on Chinese soil in 34 years, planned private discussions with Li amid shifting regional dynamics involving the Soviet Union.
