One killed in fire at South Bend hotel
A fire at the Morningside Hotel in downtown South Bend killed one person and injured nine while forcing evacuation of more than 100 residents. The blaze started on the third floor, likely from a careless smoker, and was under control by 3:30 p.m. Firefighters searched rooms through the night amid cold, wind chill, and embers. The blaze prompted the nearby Presbyterian church to evacuate, though no damage occurred there.
