The Forest City Balloon Co. drew a large crowd at the Rochelle Farmers Picnic when a 75 foot hot air balloon rose 75 to 100 feet before being secured. All crew members held it down as a gust threatened to lift it, providing spectators with a sweeping view of the fairgrounds and surrounding countryside.
Filing ends at five p.m. today for candidates in the Dixon School Board and Sauk Valley Community College Board races. Dixon has four open seats with five filed petitions including incumbents and new candidates. Sauk Valley seeks three seats with incumbents and newcomers filing petitions, plus two-year and six-year term contenders. Rose Wendler opposes Tom Densmore for the remaining two years on the college board.

Ogle County totals reach about 8,900 students and 701 teachers across districts including Meridian 223 and Forrestville 221. Eswood 269 combines Esmond and Lindenwood. 80 school days remain until Christmas.
