Vacant Many Local Schools Sit Idle Across Two Illinois Counties
Lee and Ogle counties host numerous empty school buildings once filled with students. In Lee Center a three story former school is back on the market after a $16,000 sale years ago. Grand Detour and Leaf River also report vacant structures while Leaf River moves classes to Forreston. Oregon’s Chana school was sold after district merger. Polo’s Congress Street School closed in 1983 and Rochelle’s Central School Annex was demolished. Ashton’s 1913 high school sits idle as buyer interest fades. The Eldena School remains unused in Lee County.

DC-10 engine shrapnel holes trigger emergency landing
Northwest Flight 308 from Los Angeles to Minneapolis made an emergency landing at Stapleton after the No 2 engine broke up, punching shrapnel holes in the tail. All 256 aboard survived. Officials said it could relate to a previous Sioux City crash, prompting calls to ground DC-10s pending investigation.

Dixon boards names Aubry interim superintendent
The Dixon School Board on Wednesday night named Robert Aubry as interim superintendent effective 12:01 a.m. September 1, replacing outgoing Superintendent Dr. Larry Roth who will take the Macomb School System helm that same day. Roth praised the district and Roth will begin in Macomb Sept. 1. Aubry, former Ashton Public Schools superintendent and current assistant to the superintendent, said he may seek the job full time but has not decided. The board also discussed teacher resignations, new hires, and custodial staff changes, with a State Board of Education Award planned for Madison Junior High instructor Shirley Vivian on September 29.
