Cyclist killed near Rochelle in early morning crash

A 17 year old Chana youth, John Chevas, died when his Yamaha motorcycle left Flagg Road west of Rochelle struck a utility pole and landed in a field. Investigators say he failed to negotiate a curve, helmet found but unclear if worn, coroner's office to determine details. Chevas was returning home after an evening with friends.

State traffic deaths down in Illinois in 1989 first seven months

Illinois traffic fatalities fell nearly 10 percent in the first seven months of 1989 compared with 1988. Officials cited fewer drunken drivers, higher belt use and stricter truck enforcement. Provisional totals show 883 deaths this year versus 977 last year as highway miles rose about 2.2 percent.

Chief in a cage at Lowdon Park statue restoration

Washington University Technical Associates study the Chief Blackhawk statue at Lowdon State Park to plan spring reconstruction. The statue is scaffolded with red and white streaks, chipped exterior, and cameras note the caged figure. State budget allocates 250000 for restoration next year.

Dixon plant listed among nation top polluters by wildlife group

The National Wildlife Federation named Jepscor Metals Inc. of Dixon as a leading source of toxic pollution in its Toxic 500 list for 1987. The Dixon facility, located in Green River Industrial Park since 1984, reclaims aluminum from scrap dross and melts about 12,000 pounds daily at 1,400 degrees.

Illinois crop boom aids hopes for record harvest

Washington reported a government forecast of a 278.4 million metric ton grain harvest this year with a 49 percent jump in corn. Illinois corn production is seen at 1.32 billion bushels, up 89 percent from last year, amid drought and heat. Wheat remains tight but food prices should stay stable.
