Coast robbery solved by sheriff and deputy

Sheriff E L Williams and Deputy Earl Bishop smashed a coast robbery at the Greenwood home of Mr and Mrs Charles Matson. A box of private papers and $131 were taken and recovered after one suspect confessed. The missing box was found tossed over a bluff near Fort Bragg. Russell Snider and Paul Batley are jailed awaiting justice after Bailey’s confession. The Matsons, longtime Greenwood residents, run a garage business.

Mutinous Inmates At Mendocino State Hospital

Mutinous inmates on the criminal insane floor at Mendocino State Hospital mounted a two day disturbance after new commitments arrived. Ringleaders were moved to San Quentin and staff used strong persuasion to restore order. Rumors of hacksaws and illegal tools circulated as Ukiah peace officers stood by in case of escalation.

Santa Rosa Burial For Mrs. C. Phelps

Graveside services were held in Santa Rosa for Miss Catherine Phelps who died at her North Pine street home. Rev. Short officiated in Santa Rosa while Rev. Benson led Ukiah Episcopal rites at 1:30. Interment followed in Santa Rosa Odd Fellows cemetery. Miss Phelps, 7, had lived in Ukiah 42 years, a pioneer valley resident.

The Ukiah Chamber of Commerce sent nominating ballots for the board of directors. Tomorrow secretary E. J. James will mail ballots listing winners for the final election. Awoodrow Duncan and his sister Marie Duncan faced a Superior Court charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to murder after a drunken brawl at John Downs’s Wolfe Hop Ranch home. The case stemmed from Duncan armed with a .30-30 rifle threatening witness Frank Hayden and firing at Hayden’s 15 year old son, prompting Deputy Sheriff Wayne Crawford to arrest Duncan near Ukiah.

Mr. Harris of the Morris Drug Store was called to Vallejo Saturday by the serious illness of his father George Harris who died Monday. Funeral services were held in Vallejo last Wednesday at 2 o'clock. The elder Harris had been in failing health for some time and his death was not unexpected.

Woodcutter Injured by Wedge Chip in Thigh

Funeral Held for Mrs J L O Rouke in Ukiah

Funeral services for Mrs. J. L. O Rouke were held at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Claude Mosher officiating. Interment followed in Ukiah cemetery. Mrs. O Rouke died in Seattle on a Sunday after years of illness, survived by her husband Jack O Rouke and a brother Oscar Sanford.

Auto Crashes Tree When Driver Naps

Joe Machado and Miss Leta Scarlett of San Francisco were injured last Saturday night when their car skidded on a slippery concrete near a school house at Hopland mountain foot on the Hopland Lakeport road. They were en route from San Francisco to Lake county. Scarlett suffered a broken collar bone and multiple cuts. Machado had a cut eye an injured leg and minor cuts. They were taken to Lakeport then to San Francisco by ambulance. Machado said he fell asleep before the crash.

Indian woman Louise Wathen given suspended sentence

Louise Wathen, a well known Indian woman, received a suspended six month sentence for battery. She was arrested Friday the thirteenth by Deputy Sheriff Crawford and the sentence was imposed by Justice James E. Busch. She was released after time served at the detention home.

Dr L K Van Allen reports the birth of a daughter to Mr and Mrs George Ginochio at their home on Grove Avenue last Wednesday evening. The baby weighed seven pounds twelve ounces at birth and was named Nadine.

Picturesque Coast Area Will Become State Playground

Coast residents celebrate plan to convert a vast coastal region into a state recreation area. Begun July 1934, the project employs an administrative team led by project manager William H. Gibbs and includes Pred Nicubauer, Ferris Farrington, Wille Corbett, Carl Howard, and Roy Zuver. The National Park Service, funded by the Federal Resettlement Administration, will develop about 9 000 acres linking Mendocino coast parcels with Van Damme park. The area includes 3 000 acres of small holdings with aging orchards, many abandoned after low apple prices and general disillusionment. Continued on page 8.

Walter Gardenhiere Hurt in Colusa County Crash

Walter Gardenhiere a Ukiah native and son of Mrs A N Fish of Willits was badly injured in a head on collision near Flate Colusa county last Thursday. He and two companions were in a car struck by a truck. Gardenhiere suffered a broken arm and leg and a severe skull fracture. his condition was reported as precarious.
