Article by Elizabeth Sutherland urges stronger enforcement of compulsory school attendance in Montana counties. It cites low attendance, high dropouts, and economic waste from missed days, calling for cooperation of officials, teachers, and boards to keep all eligible children in school.
This week at Beaverhead High is labeled Initiation Week with juniors and seniors enforcing comical outfits for freshmen. New faculty members are also subjected to a modified set of initiation rites as they join the school, including a morning rooster crowing interpretation.
Fire Chief W G Alexander Secretary Dexter E Moser and Henry Sanborn returned Sunday from Dillon where they attended the State Firemen convention with 30 departments represented. The meeting was one of the best in association history and offered a rich program though no state gathering was held last year due to the war. Delegates were entertained royally and Bozeman sent a car trip in Mr Alexander's new personal vehicle.
A large crowd watched Bill Strothers known as the Human Spider climb the Andrus hotel and then the White Block last Tuesday evening. He performed stunts on the ascent and rode a bicycle around the building’s projecting cornice after standing on his head on the cornice.
The county commissioners and Silver Bow board met in joint session last Tuesday in Butte to draw up the final contract for J. R. Silver the Butte contractor who will construct the two span steel bridge across the Big Hole river at Melrose.
Delegates from nearly every city and town in the state gathered for the State Firemen's association convention. Fire Chief Art J. Baker was reelected president, with Dewar Havre named first vice president and D E Moser Bozeman secretary. New members Glasgow Laurel Plentywood admitted. Memorial resolutions were adopted for deceased members.
Walter Taylor and Mrs. Taylor with the two Lovell boys returned Friday from Los Angeles. They will live in California for the winter while the boys attend school there and Mrs. Taylor stays with them.
Beaverhead post forms in Dillon as local charter received this week. Service men are urged to join at the Welcome Home dance next Wednesday with a booth for information and signups. The Legion, a civilian veterans group created after World War I, invites all eligible men and women who served between April 6 1917 and November 11 1918.
The Paris and St. Louis conventions in 1919 formalized the American Legion with a merged operating committee. National officers include Henry D. Lindsley as chairman and Gasper Bacon as treasurer. The charter vows defend the U.S. Constitution, uphold law and order, foster 100 percent Americanism, and promote peace and mutual aid.
Fire Chief Tom Daly returned from Dillon where he attended the annual convention of the Montana State Firemen's association. The former officers were re elected and 27 departments were represented. Roundup was chosen for the next meeting place and the Dillon hospitality was praised.
The fall term opened with Judge Joseph C. Smith presiding. Seven applicants appeared for citizenship exams. Henry Mansz of Grant failed and awaits depositions by October 9. Admitted were Miss Anna Huber Dillon, Rasmus J. Peterson Melrose, John B. Christman Dillon, Stephen J O Haggen Lima, Caesare Car pita Melrose. No jury summoned this term. plans made to call one for November.
Fire officials report gasoline ignition in Ed Kenison’s car at the Deputy and Voelker garage last Tuesday afternoon. A mechanic escaped injury as flames enveloped the front of the car while another pulled an exposed hose from the chemical truck and quickly doused the blaze. Damages estimated at about fifty dollars.
Justice Frank Nelson had a busy day at the courthouse last Monday marrying three couples. William H. Warren of Idaho Falls wed Florence Hackett of Brewer, Arstanus Nelson wed Yuline Christensen of Salt Lake City, and Hugh H. Pelton wed Katherine Pence in separate ceremonies.
Oldtimers recalled two score years as the Pow Wow opened last Friday in Dillon. Three days drew record crowds, with top rodeo brands, close action in rough stock events, and concerts by Salmon City and State Orphans Home bands. Notables include Walt Bennett who won bucking and steer roping honors, and youngsters Harrison and Knoll gaining crowd favor.
Articles of incorporation were recently filed for Beaverhead Building Co. The company held a Monday meeting electing E. E. Yeager as president R. W. Boone as vice president John Collins as secretary and W. B. Hartwig as treasurer The firm will buy real estate and erect business buildings and apartments with $6900 already subscribed in capital.
