Modern Woodmen To Celebrate Here

Modern Woodmen from Southwestern Montana communities invade Dillon for their annual Labor Day picnic. Senator James J. Murray and Congressman Jerry J. OConnell will speak at Dillmont park on Sunday. Events include a free street dance on Bannack street, log rolling, dances, fireworks, and baseball games. Dillon hosts various Woodmen camps with competitions for prizes and room rentals listed.

Birch Creek Man Injured In Accident

Edgar A. Sanders of Birch Creek and Mrs. Anna Baker of Homedale Idaho were injured in an automobile crash near LeGrand Oregon caused by a tire blowout en route to Elgin Oregon. Sanders suffered a broken collar bone and left thigh while Baker sustained four broken ribs and possible internal injuries.

N C C W Diocesan Convention Held in Dillon

Dillon hosted the sixteenth annual Helena Diocesan Council meeting of the National Council of Catholic Women with 110 delegates and visitors. Officers elected included L A Malone Bozeman as president and J P Miller Anaconda first vice president Catherine Doherty Butte second vice president. Helena will host next year’s conclave. The gathering featured high mass by Rev John Sullivan and the Rev James Tougas as well as social events, talks by Rev F X Lechner Mrs J E Kelly Mayor D A Galt and others. A youth session included Very Rev Monsignor J C Willging and Rev E P Gilmore.

Park to Be Dedicated September 12

The Sacajawea Park dedication will occur Sunday September 12 with Beav erhead Chapter D A R Beaverhead Mining association and the Lemhi Mining association hosting a public ceremony at the new monument on Highway 91 north of Armstead. Music talks from Dillon and Lemhi speakers highlight the Lewis and Clark history and Sacajawea’s role. A noon basket lunch funded by the Beaverhead Mining association will be served. The park aims to draw residents and tourists to Beaverhead county.

Rebekah Judge To Resume Meeting Schedule

After a two month break the Rebekah Lodge will resume its meetings, issuing a note that sessions will continue with regular cadence and planned activities restarting for the season.

Historic Ruins Of Old Smelter To Become Park Landmark

Beaverhead Mining association aims to turn the ruins of Montana’s first 1860s smelter near Argenta into a national monument with support from the Anaconda Copper Mining company and Beaverhead county commissioners. A 100 foot square area may be donated to establish the site on ArcticACM land for clear title to the monument. Mrs Charles Shipman of Rollins Wyoming visits with her aunt Mrs Mary Hauser and two children.

Astonishing Washington session ends 75th Congress

The March of Time notes the 75th Congress adjourns after a 229 day first session. Despite a Democratic majority, major work remained undone including crop limits, wages hours rules, child labor shipping bans, administrative reorganization, and new cabinet proposals. Some observers predicted a possible fall special session.

Schools Set to Welcome Children on September Seventh

Beaverhead county schools prepare for a new year with the high school unit and rural schools opening Tuesday September 7. Training School resumes September 18 and Montana State Normal College starts September 27. New instructors include Miss Mary Castles and Harold Babcock as teacher vacancies arise.

Montana Breeders to Consign Bulls at Dillon Sale

More than twenty Montana Hereford breeders plan consignments for the Dillon bull sale set for October 4 at the county fair grounds. Organizers Bernard Willams and H. B. Sager expect stock from Beaverhead and other counties with buyers and breeders anticipated in large numbers. Local Beaverhead participants include W. S. Tash, George Harrison, and Frank Pendleton alongside numerous named breeders from across the state.

Dorothy Lentz Honored Before Departure for Wichita

Mrs Morse Waldorf entertained two bridge ken o tables Monday evening honoring Miss Dorothy Lentz who will resume work in Wichita Kansas. Miss Lentz received many lovely handkerchiefs and guests enjoyed delicious refreshments at the close.

Dairy Ranch Blaze Destroys Cantrell Chicken House

Early Monday fire at Cantrell Dairy farm north of town destroyed a large chicken house. The Dillon volunteer fire department saved the house, barns, and other buildings with the new rural fire truck. About 85 chickens died in the blaze as flames spread from a dry grass patch near the structure.
