Diocesan Council Convention to Open in Helena

Preparations for the sixteenth annual Helena Diocesan Council convention of the National Council of Catholic Women are nearly complete. The opening high mass is set for Sunday at 10 30 AM at St Rose Catholic Church with more than a hundred delegates expected.

Fire Danger In Forests On Increase

Two small fires erupted in Beaverhead county last week. A Polaris Lake blaze covered about two acres and required five miles of CCC-built trail to reach it. Sixty CCC boys fought the fire. it was controlled by Saturday morning with little damage. A brush fire in Smallhorn canyon was reported Sunday morning and also caused minimal damage.

Rife Ranch Swamp Fire Quelled In Beaverhead County

The mysterious burning swamp at Ike Rife ranch in Medicine Lodge district was finally quenched by seven CCC workers after burning over 20 acres. Fire fought by pumping water from springs via 2500 feet of hose, with underground flames 14 to 16 inches deep.

Smokey Bill Dungan Found After Ten Years Missing

Smokey Bill Dungan a noted horse wrangler is located by his parents and brother after a decade apart. The search from LaVerne Oklahoma led to Billings and Dillon with help from a rodeo poster and local performers. Smokey Bill shared his stories during a welcome reunion this week.

Improvements At City Hall Planned In Dillon

City intends to renovate the Dillon City Hall with a new roof redecking, auditorium renovation for heat and acoustics, lowering ceiling, painting and light fixture resets. Storm vestibules to three ground floor entrances. Also bids sought for a 1500 gallon street flusher with diesel motor and a truck chassis. Jack Smith of Melrose visited Dillon on business last Friday.

Hartwig Wins Title From H. Brundage

Hartwig and his son Tom captured titles at the 1937 Dillon County club championship. W. B. Hartwig defeated H M Brundage three up in the championship flight and Tom Hartwig won the first flight. Driving honors went to Dave Williams with 231 yards.

Mayland Named Secretary of Dillon Chamber of Commerce

Mayland Jennings, local attorney and former secretary of the farm debt advisory committee in Helena, was elected secretary by the Dillon Chamber of Commerce board. He holds a law degree and a B A in journalism from the Missoula institution and will lead the membership drive as the club serves Beaverhead county. Residents are urged to join and contact Mayland immediately.

Beaverhead County Delegation Seeks Daly Spur Dam Plan

A Beaverhead county group testified before the Montana water conservation board in Helena on a major Beaverhead river project known as the Daly spur dam. No action was taken as PWA currently does not accept applications for such large projects. The delegation included Representative Joe Metlen and others. most returned home after the hearing.

Forest Service completes Ruby to Virginia City phone line

Beaverhead national forest announces completion of a 36 mile wire link from Wall Creek to Virginia City via Black Butte Vigilante station Crockett Lake and 35 stockmen families will use the line for fire control administration and communications. CCC crew led by foreman Pete Iden built the line in six weeks west of town with a camp on site.
