Modern Woodmen Labor Day Picnic Thrives Despite Rain

The Modern Woodmen of America picnic at Dillmont park drew members from Butte Anaconda Deer Lodge Twin Bridges Ennis and Harrison despite heavy rain. Congressman Jerry J. OConnell spoke. Butte McQueens beat the Woodmen 4 2 in ball, and a Twin Bridges team won 10 7. Local events featured races dances and a fireworks display with Dillon organizers led by N P Christiansen Fred Kerr Normal Nelson Glen Lyons Frank McFadden Walter Stinson John Spehar and Ray Meguire.

Beaverhead County High Enrollment Nears Record

Beaverhead County High School nears a record enrollment with about 250 registered by Wednesday noon and a projected total of 300 for the year. Principal Conrad Orr notes the large freshman class, about 90 on the first day, causing textbook shortages in several classes.

Rural Schools of County Opened With Stable Registration

Rural schools across the county opened last Tuesday with about the same registration as last year. Nell Doyle, county superintendent, lists new and returning teachers for the autumn term across districts including Bannack-Rayburn Thompson and Riverside Theodore Lavine. Several schools note unannounced or missing staff, while Reichle has no school this year and Monida lists Winifred Mikesell as staff.

Social interest surrounds the wedding of Helen Ensign Wilkinson and Kenneth A. Brown at the St James Episcopal home ceremony. The groom is from St Paul Minnesota and the bride, daughter of Sam and Mrs Wilkinson, earned Carleton College degrees and graduate work at Minnesota. The couple will reside in St Paul.

State Breeders Name Bulls For Sale Here

Information is received daily about about 80 head of Hereford bulls to be sold at the Dillon sale on October 4. Breeders from Montana including A C Bayer Twin Bridges and Jesse Bradley Bozeman will consign multiple bulls. The sale aims to expand use of better sires and boost local breeding outlets as Beaverhead County hosts a growing annual event.

Holloran Named Beaverhead County Public Health Nurse

Miss Margaret Holloran of Dillon was named Beaverhead county public health nurse by the county commissioners to replace Luella Stickney who resigned to supervise public nurses in Western Montana. The board also accepted J H Gilbert’s resignation from the high school board and appointed W G Gilbert to serve the remainder of the term. Painters were authorized to include the courthouse foundation in their contract.

Many Arrests During Holiday Patrol In Lima County

Sheriff Paul Temple and Chief Charles Nelson led a busy patrol over the double holiday with multiple arrests. R H Waldemar was fined $3 for lacking proper clearance and tail lights in Judge Stahl’s court. Bud Horton faced six months in jail or county exile after a tavern brawl knife incident in Wisdom. Dan Ragsuill, held on forgery suspicions in Wisdom, pleaded guilty to a Monday arrest. Ira Gordon and Harold Craven were jailed for driving while intoxicated Sunday night. F W Muhlfeit paid a $15 fine for reckless driving after a collision with a Freeman vehicle.

Duck season opens October 9 for 30 days in Montana

State Game Warden James Weaver announced Montana's duck hunting period runs from October 9 to November 7 daily 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Federal rules limit to shotguns only with three shells and ten ducks per day or five geese per day, require duck stamps on licenses, ban blind baiting and hunting from sink boxes or boats except rowboats.

Dedication of Sacajawea Park Sunday

Sacajawea Park near Armstead will be dedicated Sunday by the Beaverhead Chapter of the D A R and local mining associations. The event honors Sacajawea and marks the site where the Lewis and Clark expedition met the Two Forks of the Jefferson River. The Montana Highway Commission funded about 7000 for the marker and grounds. A 1:30 basket luncheon precedes the 2:30 dedication with a high school band, remarks by Rep. Joe Metlen, a Legion flag salute, and speeches by Rev. M Tragitt Jr and Mrs. A J Balm, Montana D A R regent.

Rotary Hearing Travel Talk At Tuesday Meeting

Rotary club heard Dr E Davis recount a two week Southwest trip with notes on improved tourist camps in Idaho Colorado New Mexico Arizona and Utah. Miss Marguerite Collins performed two piano solos and Davis praised the Gallup New Mexico Indian festival as a colorful highlight of the journey.
