Dillon Legionnaires and Auxiliary members attended the dedication of a new American Legion hall at Wisdom on Oct. 11. George Gosman state department commander led the local delegation with Mrs. Gosman and many couples present. Talks were given by Gosman Mrs. Warner and Mr. Gilbert.

Youths Escape Jail In Helena Staged Breakout
Garvin Pilland aged 17 and George Kelp 15 escaped the Lewis and Clark jail in Helena by striking jailer George Davis with a wash weight. They were earlier arrested in Armstead by Patrolman Robert Wright for stealing two automobiles in Helena and were later recaptured near Logan by a train crew and returned to the Helena jail.

Elk Sanctuary Patrol Urged By Sportsmen
At a Beaverhead Sportsmen association meeting, members urged the Montana Fish and Game commission to certify special and paid deputies to patrol Blacktail and Sage Creek areas where Yellowstone elk were released two years ago. They reported poaching deaths, a 850 reward, and 9,000 fingerlings planted in local streams from Ennis hatchery.

Top Price Paid For Beaverhead Ewes
One of the best prices in recent years for ewes was received last week when 1,500 head were reported sold for ten dollars each to Sam Dawes of Willow Creek. The two year old ewes came from the Schulz and Morrison ranch in the Centennial valley and had ranged the past summer in the valley and vicinity.

Beloved Montana Clergyman Dies After Illness
The Rev W H Mitchell an esteemed Montana Episcopal clergyman died at his home 227 East Sebree street Tuesday morning after a fortnight of illness from a heart attack He was born September 8 1861 in Drummondville Quebec oldest of eight He trained for the ministry in several states and towns and retired in January 1933 before moving to Dillon He served at Kennewick Washington and filled pulpits in St James Episcopal church here during earlier seasons.

Longtime Beaverhead official O M Best dies at 82
O M Best longtime Beaverhead County assessor died last Saturday in Dillon at age 82 after 57 years in the community. Born February 17 1857 in Vicksburg Michigan he worked for the Grand Trunk and Union Pacific railroads before settling in Dillon in 1885. He served as county assessor from 1932 and held multiple public roles including city council trustee school boards and church roles. He was married Ida Pierce and survived by wife two sons a brother several grandchildren and a nephew. Funeral services were held at Grace Methodist Church with burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

Beaverhead Red Cross Names New Head for Campaign
At a Beaverhead chapter meeting last Monday evening plans were made for the annual roll call drive. Dr. W. H. Stephan will head the membership campaign set to run Nov 3 through Thanksgiving. Rural and Dillon city chairmen will be named soon as the drive aims to boost Red Cross support for war relief efforts. Present were Lee R. Light Dr. Stephan Guy Combes Harold Snow and T. E. Luebben.

Beaverhead county marks its fifth anniversary of home demonstration work with an all day program at Bagley school on Saturday Oct 21. Registration starts at 10 AM with exhibits from 1 PM featuring home furnishings handcraft food preservation foods and nutrition and clothing. The afternoon program begins at 2 PM with a musical pageant Mary Pretty Mary by Mrs Carrie Mae Moore Bozeman and performances led by Miss Nell McKnight and Waldron Boger. Prizes will be awarded for member and distance categories.

Engineers Arrive to Survey Beaverhead Dam Site
Ten engineers of the United States Reclamation Service from Denver arrive in Dillon to survey the Daly Spur dam site on the Beaverhead river. The crew and families will stay in Dillon during tests of the canyon to assess feasibility of damming and irrigation for Benchland in Beaverhead Valley. Funding came from the recent Congressional appropriation.

Former resident Will Templin dies in Bozeman
Will Templin died at a Bozeman hospital on September 19. A Beaverhead county resident for 25 years, he lived in Dillon and Horse Prairie. Born December 23, 1891 in Danville Indiana, he married Caroline Hoffman of Dillon and later owned hotels in Norris. Survived by his widow three children Ethel Rush Colbert and Ernest six grandchildren one great grandchild two brothers and three sisters.

Fur farmers from the Northwest plan a mass meeting Sunday Oct 29 at 7 PM in the city hall council chambers Dillion. Many Awards Announced for Dillon Hereford Show Oct. 29
Dillon Hereford show awards and prizes for every division were posted for the event at the county stock pavilion on Sunday October 29. Three new awards were announced this week by Bernard Williams secretary and manager. A silver cup from Montana Mercantile Sales will go to the reserve champion and Beaverhead Saddlery of Dillon will present the compliments. A bronze plaque will go to the best pair of bulls bred and owned by a single exhibitor. Prize money of 8 6 4 and 2 dollars will be awarded to the first four bulls in summer yearlings junior yearlings and two year olds.
