Prizes Announced for Dillon Hereford Show and Sale
The Dillon Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Hereford bull show on Oct 29 and a purebred Hereford sale Oct 30 at the county fairgrounds livestock pavilion. Bulls compete in three divisions with prizes in each class and a grand and reserve champion. First four prizes per class are 8 6 4 and 2 dollars. A silver plaque goes to the best pair bred and owned by one exhibitor. Prize money is donated by local merchants and businesses. Catalogues are available through Bernard Williams, county agent and sale manager.

Forest Cooperators Help Limit Beaverhead Fires This Season
Beaverhead National Forest officials report 34 fires this season with 21 first detected by non forest service cooperators. Cooperators initiated suppression on ten fires and fully or largely contained four without forest service aid, helping keep total burn low despite a high number of blazes. The Horse Prairie fire on Sept. 9 illustrates cooperative efforts.

John Peterson, a prominent Montana rancher, was killed at his Big Hole basin ranch near Jackson when an employee, Eric Runer, allegedly shot him in the back with a .30-30 rifle. Runer, 21, fled, later killed himself in nearby willows as a posse closed in.

Dillon Boy Scouts Receive $1000 Bequest
The late Harry W. Turner left a $1000 bequest to the Dillon Boy Scout organization among nine gifts to crippled children and youth groups. Other bequests include the Bagdad Temple of the Shrine in Butte and various Scout and Girl Scout units in Dillon, Carmel, and Butte. Turner, once with Union Electric and Montana Electric in Butte, died in Carmel on August 2.

John Peterson Rites Held for Beaverhead Rancher
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Masonic hall for John Peterson 66 a prominent Beaverhead County cattleman shot by a ranch hand at his Jackson area ranch He was born September 8 1873 in Almhult Sweden and became a naturalized citizen in 1895 A longtime rancher he built holdings in the Big Hole basin Horse Prairie Medicine Lodge and Grasshopper valley He was known as the cattle king of the county and held multiple Masonic and Knights Templar memberships in Dillon and Butte

During Fire Prevention Week from October 8 Dillon residents are urged to remove fire hazards on their premises. The Dillon Volunteer Fire Department notes low fire losses due to citizen care and prompt responses, and asks cooperation since firefighters work without pay to protect the community.

Steady progress on Dillon REA line construction reported
Langford Electric contractors say about 50 miles of the 200 mile rural electric line near Dillon completed with 20 more miles ready for pole erection. At a Dillon Chamber of Commerce meeting a letter requesting aid in snow removal for Bannack pass on the Armstead Leadore highway was prepared for presentation to the district forest service offices in Missoula and Ogden. The Ogden office oversees the graded highway from the pass to Leadore Idaho.
