Dillon residents are urged to buy Christmas Seals to support the tuberculosis crusade. The appeal notes 1938 and 1987 death figures rising to 235, urging extended fundraising to aid health, happiness, and life in defeating the disease. Signed D A Galt.
Beaverhead county high school trustees set December 14 for contract bids to demolish the present high school and construct a new two story building. Five contracts cover demolition, general construction, plumbing and heating, electrical, and sound clock and bell systems. Maximum spend about 265000 dollars with bids due by 1:30 p.m. December 14 and opening publicly. Evacuation starts December 16 and students will transfer to the Normal college while equipment is stored. Final blueprints approved with architects Hugenin and DeKay assisting.
Mrs Marcus Rand of Armstead county chairman presided as Beav erhead county home demonstration clubs showcased the annual achievement program at the training school. Dr Martin K Farmer and Miss Lillian Stone spoke. musical numbers featured Mrs Vera Cooke Hazel and others. Four exhibits traveled to local stores. other displays included Bugs Winter Cook Book Canning and more.
Charles S. White, 68, laborer, was sentenced to thirty days in the county jail by Judge George Opp after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace. He allegedly fired at Al Cramer during a bar altercation over money, but the shot missed and the bullet struck the floor. Cramer, employed by Berg Christensen, was later released.
Burton Bachellor 19 received eight years for car theft after pleading guilty. Terry O Hara 23 got one year for stealing a car owned by Fred Grufig on Oct 27. Forest Helfer pleaded guilty to forgery and drew two years. Helfer was taken to Deer Lodge, with the others transferred Wednesday.
Rev Paris E Wells of the Presbyterian church spoke to Rotarians on Monday night praising Americas heritage and Pilgrims. He urged gratitude for freedom science and religious liberty and noted Montana's enduring Western friendship as a major tourist draw. Ed Hilger Gilbert Hilde and Paul Anderson were introduced as new members.
County observes Thanksgiving with morning Union services at Presbyterian church from 10 30 to 11 30 led by Rev J A Meeke of the Methodist church and Presbyterian choir music.Christian Science society holds an 11 o clock service on Thanksgiving eve with topic Thanks giving. Stores banks offices close. schools closed including Normal college and high school. Holiday dances planned at high school gym and Thanksgiving night hosted by the firemen.
Old King Winter hit Dillon again with temperatures near zero. The Normal College station reported six below and Butte records showed 14 below. After two days of frigid weather a warm-up was expected but a new season low appeared. Ranchers in the valley reported as cold as 14 below.
Jackson residents Benny Johnson Bobby Peterson Bobby Nelson Anna Lee Shepherd and Richard and Jack Shepherd attended Beav er Head County High School carnival and returned home Sunday.

H.F. Trautman, 33, believed despondent over ill health and work troubles, shot himself with a .25 caliber pistol Saturday morning in the Oakland rooms. He lived over 24 hours, identified himself to a nurse, and died at Barrett hospital Sunday noon. An unintelligible note was found. he had recently arrived from Elko, Nevada.
An employee committee from Union Pacific toured Dillon to collect data on rail service from Butte to Salt Lake City. Members included W L Baugh C F Studebaker and Tom Farmer, with John D Hague leading interviews of shippers and receivers.
Police investigate a burglary at Roselle's Firmstead late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Entry was gained by breaking a door panel and the burglars stole a large phonograph machine and the cash register.
Miss Lillian Stone resigns after five years as Beaverhead county part time home demonstration agent. She will take a full time post in Lewis and Clark county, based in Helena, succeeding Mrs. Neva McGraw, with early December start. Stone is a Montana State College graduate and helped organize many 4 H and home demonstration clubs.
The thermometer fell to three degrees for a second time this month signaling continued cold weather. Forecasters warned of continued frigid temps and potential impact on local services.
William J. Heaston Jr was found guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Wise River rancher Joseph W Potts. A district court jury fixed a life imprisonment term and sentencing was postponed pending defense motions and possible appeal. Judge Henry G Rodgers set further hearings for arrest of judgement and motions for new trial with options to appeal to the state supreme court. Heaston, 78, remained calm as verdict read and the case continued to Page Five.
The 1938 Christmas Seal campaign against tuberculosis begins Thanksgiving Day and runs through Christmas with the theme Protection of the Home. Mary L. Innes announces the program with Mrs F D Willis appointed seal sale chairman for Dillon. Volunteers play a key role as the campaign notes progress against tuberculosis.
