Young People From Farms Enter Normal Schools
Rural youth supply to teacher colleges varies by state with 65 percent of Missouri teachers college students from farms, 40 percent at Louisiana State Normal, and 83 percent at Michigan normal schools. Average across several states hovers around 20 percent. Only 6 percent of graduates from 17 normal schools entered rural schools in 1920, though one state sent 57 percent to rural postings. A Carnegie Foundation note says rural teaching demands high quality, and future rural teachers depend on opportunities and support from legislators.
