Deer Lodge hosts second annual state baseball championship

Deer-Lodge Montana will host the second annual state semi professional baseball tournament from July 4 to 11 under Kiwanis sponsorship. Cash prizes will be awarded and the Honus Wagner trophy goes to the winner. Separate notes include land deals in Idaho and California, license fee changes in Helena, and fruit harvest forecasts for western Montana.

Federation Holds Semi annual Meet at Wise River

Beaverhead County records show the Federation of Women’s Clubs held its thirty first semi annual meeting May 22 at the Wise River schoolhouse hosted by Wise River club. President Mrs C W Francis of Wisdom presided as singing and prayers opened the session. Committees were named including Credentials Resolutions and Courtesy Program and Auditing. A plan for a county library service committee was formed led by Mrs Warren Hughes Miss Jean Bishop and Mrs Ted Woodward. Miss Lillian Stone announced an Achievement Day for June 25 and a mass road promotion meeting for Wisdom May 23. Luncheon featured solos dances and cowboy costumed performances. An afternoon play They Criticize and How was presented by the hostess club.

Dillon to Join Montana State League in 90 game baseball race

The Montana State League opens Sunday with six teams in a 90 game schedule including Dillon, the first year the town fields a team in the pennant chase. Dillon plays 30 games beginning May 30 at Butte and features afternoon and evening starts across Dillon East Helena Missoula Anaconda and Butte venues.

Oscar Johnson Illness Victim in Dillon

Oscar Johnson, 57, a well known Dillon resident, died unexpectedly Thursday at his home. Born in Dillon in 1880, he lived most of his life here worked as a plumber and steamfitter with time in San Francisco and Los Angeles before returning two years ago to run a local business. Surviving relatives include a brother A B Johnson and sister Mrs R W Boone, both of Dillon, several uncles and aunts, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held.

Legionnaires Offer Memorial Eve Services in Dillon

Beaverhead County observances pause to honor fallen soldiers with a twilight Memorial Eve service at 7:00 pm in Mountain View cemetery. Beaverhead Post No. 20 of the American Legion hosts the program at the Legion plot, inviting all citizens to participate in remembering heroes from World War I to present. A Legionnaires committee led by C. J. Hovren chairs arrangements with Walter Stamm and Parker T. Scott.

Dillon Country Club Announces Year Golf Program

The Dillon Country club lists five competitive events for the season. The invitational tournament was held Sunday with Deer Lodge and Anaconda clubs visiting. Remaining events include a two ball mixed foursome on June 13, a sweepstakes handicap on June 20, and a club championship August 20 to 22 with qualifying rounds August 15 to 17. A team dinner match on September 12 closes the season, with the losers hosting the winners. Tournament committee members are Morse Waldorf Bill Backus Leonard Schulz and Bernice Metlen.

Double Holiday Closures Noted For Dillon Stores

In line with established practice, local businesses in Dillon will close on Monday for a holiday. Memorial Day this year falls on Sunday, affecting work and store hours accordingly.

College Commencement Schedule for State Normal

A full slate of events marks State Normal college commencement week. Senior dinner June 5 at Andrus Grill begins activities, with commencement address by Alfred Atkinson on June 9 at 10:00 AM in the college auditorium. Other events include the training school commencement June 3, Junior Prom June 5, Baccalaureate June 6, graduation dinner June 6, president’s reception June 7, senior play June 7, traditional processions June 8, and an informal dance the night before commencement.

Normal Bulldogs win Montana Conference baseball title

The Normal Bulldogs defeated the Montana Mines 22-4 to claim the Montana Conference baseball title at a Billings tournament. They byed in the first round and beat Billings Polytechnic 9-4, with Schoonover pitching well. Regular star Robinson did not pitch due to a sore arm.

Rotary hears dentistry talk by Dr. R. D. Curry

Dr. R D Curry of Dillon spoke to the Rotary club on focal infection in dentistry and its link to systemic disease. He traced historic views from Mayo Clinic’s Roseneau and noted evidence linking dental sources to overall health. Rush Jordan presided. D L Johnson was introduced as a guest.

Mildred Jacobs to Wilfred Vezina to Wed

Word has been received of the marriage of Miss Mildred Jacobs daughter of Mr and Mrs Willis Martinell of Dillon to Wilfred Vezina of Philipsburg. The couple will make their home in Philipsburg.

Season Baseball Tickets On Sale In Montana League

Season tickets for home games in the Montana State Baseball League are now available and a drive to sell them has begun. Tickets cost 3.50 and admit to 15 scheduled home games featuring Dillon versus Missoula Anaconda Butte and East Helena in Sunday and twilight games. Commissioner William Steele says the sale aims to fund the Dillon team.

Ladies urged to claim children’s pictures loaned at silver tea

Mrs. Rodger Murray asks Montana Mercantile patrons to collect many children’s pictures still awaiting pickup from last Wednesday’s silver tea. She appeals to the ladies who have not yet called to do so promptly.

Tax payments near deadline for semi annual installments

County treasurer Bertie Matthews reports only a small share of the half year tax due has been paid with a few days left. Payments totaling 12478 have been made toward an anticipated 101694, and any unpaid taxes will become delinquent under the changed law after Memorial Day.
